Questions every couple should ask

August 4, 2026 · 5 min read

Most couples talk every day and still miss the things that matter. The right questions change that.

The questions we forget to ask

Daily check-ins tend to skim the surface: schedules, errands, logistics. Those conversations keep a household running, but they rarely tell you how your partner actually feels.

The highest-value questions are usually the ones we assume we already know the answer to — which is exactly why we should ask them.

Questions about support

Ask things like: "When you're having a rough day, what do you actually want from me — advice, space, or just company?" Most partners have a specific answer, and most of us guess wrong.

"What did your last bad day feel like, and what helped?" turns an abstract preference into a concrete memory, which is much easier to learn from.

Questions about the relationship

"What's something I do that makes you feel most cared for?" and "What's one thing you wish I noticed more?" are direct — and almost always worth the discomfort.

Make these a low-stakes ritual, not a one-time interrogation. One question at a time, no right answer, no scorekeeping.
