How to start a hard conversation

June 23, 2026 · 5 min read

Most arguments are lost in the first minute — before the real issue is even on the table.

Lead with the feeling, not the accusation

Starting with "you always" puts the other person on defense before the conversation begins. Starting with "I've been feeling" gives them room to listen.

Say what you've noticed and how it landed, then ask for their side. The goal is to compare perspectives, not to win.

Ask for a good time

Ambushing a hard topic in the middle of a busy day guarantees a worse conversation. A simple "I want to talk about something — when's a good time?" changes everything.

Naming that the topic is important, without dumping the whole issue immediately, lowers the threat level.

Stay on one topic

Hard conversations spiral when they widen. Pick the single most important thing and keep returning to it when the discussion drifts.

If a new issue comes up, park it: "That sounds worth its own conversation." Protecting the focus protects the relationship.
